The
Cariari Country Club has its own golf course, one that is considered
among the best in Costa Rica and in Central America. This 18-hole course
was designed by the famous golf course builder, Arch. George Fazio, and
was built between 1970 and 1973 by his nephew, Tom Fazio.
This par 71 course measures 6.577 yards, its slope is 132, and the course
rating 71.9, characteristics that qualify it as a championship course.
The four pars are difficult and five pars need very precise strokes in
order to reach the green. The field’s total extension is 35 hectares,
which is two thirds of the Club’s property.
The course has 18 holes of excellent design. Its yardage and levels of
difficulty are the following:

In
spite of the fact that the course does not look long in terms of yardage
because it is 1.000 meters above the level of the sea; and since it is
necessary to walk up and down its lovely hills, it is necessary to play
more physically than what it might suggest. Its design makes that several
of its landing areas be uphill, and that the fairways curvatures and
their narrowness obligate the player to have to choose from different
golf clubs at the starting driver. This makes the second strokes be done
with very long golf clubs when aimed to a series of well protected greens.
Another important element in the level of difficulty in the course is its
uneven downhill fast greens.
The course is covered with a lot of trees and vegetation,
the fairways are narrow and have some cross bunkers; besides, they are
well protected by sand traps.
Our course is in reality a big challenge for the golf
player, even more during the dry season when strong winds blow. It is not
only these features, but also its tree population that make of this course
one of the prettiest in Central America. It is in deed a paradise for our
player for its flora and fauna, a fact that helps to make of the golfing
experience something even more pleasant.
The fairways have bermuda 419 grass and the greens bermuda
328, which is carefully cut in order to keep it impeccable, so the ball
rolls fast and direct.
New field record: On February 11th, 2006, was played the
KAI FIEBERG COSTA RICA OPEN 2006; it was a beautiful summer day, with the
absence of the usual wind, wich makes a great difference in Cariari. Very
early we knew that the day could be the hoped one, when a new record was
achieved. Indeed, at the end of the day we had the results, and this time
two players beated the record with a 65 gross (6 low par). This players
were the Argentinians SEBASTIÁN FERNÁNDES and EDUARDO ARGIRO.

Cariari was the venue of the Friendship Cup in 1979
and 1980. This event was sponsored by the PGA, and was won by Larry
Zeigler (2 down) and Raymond Floyd (9 up.)
Cariari has welcomed several events like the open
tournaments of South and Central America, which have been sponsored by
the Professional Golf Association and the Friendship Tournament. These
events have always attracted well known players such as chi-chi
Rodríguez, Tom Weiskof, Larry Ziegler, Raymond Floyd, Peter Jacobsen, David
Graham, Curtis Strange, and many others.
The two types of events carried out are:
- National: They are
basically aimed to club members. Among them: Father and Son,
President Cup and Club Championship; or tournaments for national
players like Florida Cup, Toys for Tots, Continental Airlines, the
Ronald McDonald Foundation, and others during the year. Normally one
of these events is held once a month.
- The other type of
tournaments is the internationals like the Costa Rica Open that is
played during the first week of February. In this event we have
players from Europe, North, Central and South America. It is part of
the Tour de Las Americas and the European Challenge Tour.
In January, 2004, The Children and Junior Central American
Championship took place in the Club. This event takes place in a rota
system in one of the participating countries, and in this opportunity it
was held in Cariari Country Club. During the first week of February 2005,
in team work with the Costa Rica Country Club, the LXII version of the
Central American Championship of Panama and Central American Clubs took
place here.
On the outside of the Men’s golf lockers there was a
notice board including all the information related to the upcoming
tournaments, general information, regulations, rates, ads and other facts
important for the players.
Among the services the club offers, we can mention that it
has a putting green equipped with a lighting system, and a
pitching/chipping facility. The Club also has a Driving Range, in which
there is a practice balls renting service.
On December 2002, a small pitch and putt course was
opened. It has holes of approximately 40 yards and a complete zone to
practice short range games.
